The Backbenders
Since meeting online during 2021 in the Bioleadership Fellowship, Amy and Rachael have been evolving a shared art practice of performance and play; rooted in our mutual interests of regeneration, nature-based leadership, and return to ritual.
Amy Wilson and Rachael Castell, together known as the Backbenders, are artists, eco-feminist business owners, educators and fools that separately and together create real-world, paradigm shifting interventions that tell new stories to inspire the imagination in service of a new tomorrow.
Our current project Love You Mama Earth (LYME) is the latest in a series of international, public-engagement invitations that embody the tenets of regeneration, intersectionality, inter-species relationality and a just transition… and tidily embed them within acts of PLAY (as demonstrated by our central character THE FOOL).
Imagine a being in a backbend.
This being understands their body
is an energy system.
Kundalini.
the awakened chakras.
the divine serpent.
Imagine that this generous being
holds themselves in this yielding position,
balanced in the ultimate act of strength and flexibility daily.
As the grand wheel turns
this being, harnessed to the earth moon and sun
channels a great green river of acceptance and love.
Through their arched back
they create a portal with their own body
that connects this earthly plane
to the anima mundi; what Plato calls “the world's soul”.

The Backbend project was birthed from a place of cosmic abundant love.
With it, we evoke the archetype of the ancient wise goddess; to employ the quality of surrender and strength to bring about transformation.
